The release date for Varisu’s Telugu ‘Varasudu’ premiere has sadly been postponed, but when will the movie now debut in theatres?
The Indian cinema industry is starting 2023 with a bang thanks to the highly-anticipated Thunivu and Varisu titles.
Both films are set to premiere in theatres both domestically in India and around the world this week, set to be incorporated into the Pongal celebrations.
However, the release date for Varisu’s Telugu version has sadly been postponed; so, why has Varasudu been delayed and when will it now premiere?
The upcoming Varisu movie, also known as Thalapathy 66, is scheduled to premiere in theatres around the world on Wednesday, January 11.
However, not all available versions of the Varisu movie will debut on January 11, with confirmation that the release date for Varasudu (the Telugu dubbed version of the film) had sadly been postponed.
On January 9, Sri Venkateswara Creations confirmed on Twitter that Varasudu (aka Varisu) will release in theatres for Telugu audiences on Saturday, January 14.
The reason for the postponement, as shared by Producer Dil Raju via Pinkvilla, is to give priority to Chiranjeevi’s Waltair Veerayya and Balakrishna’s Veera Simha Reddy; both of which are set to premiere in Pongal too.
“I have said many times that Varasudu is not in any competition with Chiranjeevi’s Waltair Veerayya and Balakrishna’s Veera Simha Reddy. Varasudu is a complete family entertainer. I have showed family entertainers in the past for Sankranthi, so with the same thought I wanted to release Varasudu.” – Dil Raju, via Pinkvilla.
Raju would then add that, “Balakrishna and Chiranjeevi garu need a huge release in Telugu states, so I took this decision positively to release my film later.”
Interestingly, the filmmaker would then share how “The industry biggies are very happy with my decision”, indicating that the postponement is not expected to significantly impact the wider industry.
“Movies of our Telugu stars should be given first priority so that they can have a wide release. They should get theatres everywhere. I have no qualms if my film releases later.” – Dil Raju, via The News Minute.
Per OTTPlay, the Hindi version will also release on Friday, January 13.

According to reports online, the digital home media rights for the Varisu movie have already been sold to the Amazon Prime Video streaming platform, with satellite rights being sold to Sun TV.
Whilst the exact amount that Prime Video paid for Varisu remains TBA, Binged reports that “the film has been bought by the streaming giant at the highest ever amount for any Tamil film so far.”
However, the film has made an impressive return on the initial Rs 200 Crore budget, with the non-theatrical rights (satellite, digital, audio, and dubbings) being sold for Rs 150 and the theatrical rights earning a whopping Rs 139 Crore.
