Basketball. In the game for three quarters, UF Angers ends up cracking in Villeneuve d’Ascq
Opposed to Villeneuve d’Ascq for match n°1 of the LFB quarter-finals, the Angevines held their own against the second of the regular season for a long time, before, physically worn out, giving in in the fourth quarter and losing 96- 79.
After a lot of inaccuracies to start, Villeneuve widens a first gap (6-2, 3rd). UFAB, which remains afloat thanks to the scoring of Cornélie-Sigmundova (5 points in 4 minutes), ends up going back in front (8-9, 6th). Deprived of two rotations – Bailey and Elenga, packages -, the team of David Gautier wears out and sometimes loses a little lucidity, as on this award-winning basket + fault of Peterson conceded in front of the Nordiste Salaun (19-15, 9th) . But instead of panicking, UFAB drew from afar – Cornélie-Sigmundova then Dréano-Trecant – to finally finish the first quarter in the lead (21-25, 10th).
In the process, Angers push their advantage (25-30, 12th) and manage to defend effectively. Driven by their distant address (6/12 to 3 points at the break) – that of Slonjsak, in particular (11 points to 60%) -, the visitors even dig a little bit further (33-39, 17th). But the undermining work, under the circle, of the interiors of the ESBVA (24 interior points at the break, against 8 for Angers) ends up bearing fruit, and as the break approaches, the second of the regular season regained control of the match after a 9-0 in two minutes (42-39, 19th). Tired, the Angevines mess up their end of the half – this offensive rebound inexplicably escaped by Richardson… – but Peterson, discreet until then (4 points in 13 minutes), puts them back on track with an award-winning shot at the buzzer. At halftime, everything remains to be done (45-44, 20th).
Villeneuve scores four award-winning baskets in less than 120 seconds
Upon returning from the locker room, the two teams went first in quick succession (50-51, 22nd). Then Villeneuve d’Ascq accelerates to offer its biggest lead so far, after an 11-0 in three minutes (58-51, 25th). Under the shrapnel (64-56, 28th) of an unleashed Anderson (11 points in the third quarter), Angers does not lose the thread and relies on its young people like Heyman and Mercercon, but also on the experience of Arrondo, who brings his own to -4 in the attack on the home stretch (71-67, 30th).
Angers suffered and two consecutive award-winning baskets – Anderson then Hériaud – pushed Gautier’s team to ten points for the first time in the match (77-67, 33′). Two new warheads later – Ygueravide and Hériaud – the meeting seems to have changed forever (83-69, 34th). The Angevines have the merit of hanging on (85-78, 36th), but they lack the resources to completely fill the gap, which the Northerners continue to maintain with award-winning baskets (90-78, 38th). It will be necessary to recharge the batteries before match n°2, scheduled for this Tuesday, May 10 in Angers.
