Which OTT streaming platform has acquired the digital rights for Varisu and what date is the film predicted to release for home media?
It’s arguably the biggest day for Indian cinema of the year, despite 2023 only being a matter of days old.
This is because two giants of the Indian cinema industry are set to go head-to-head this Pongal, with Thunivu and Varisu both making their global premiere today, January 11.
However, fans are already looking ahead to the OTT release; so, which platform has acquired the streaming rights and when could the film potentially release online?
The OTT streaming rights for the Varisu movie have been sold to Amazon Prime Video.
The OTT Play platform first reported that Amazon Prime Video had acquired the OTT streaming rights for Varisu back in September 2022.
“Varisu has locked Amazon Prime Video as its post-theatrical OTT streaming partner. The film will stream in all South Indian languages on Amazon weeks after its theatrical debut.” – Mirchi9.
This has since been reaffirmed by various media outlets and journalists including Christopher Kanagaraj, with The Times of India reporting that the non-theatrical rights (including OTT, digital, and audio) were sold for a whopping Rs 150 Crore.
Incredibly, this means that Varisu had almost broken even prior to the global premiere on January 11, with a set budget of Rs 200 Crore.
Whilst a specific release date for OTT streaming has not yet been confirmed by Varisu, modern Indian movies typically premiere online between 6-8 weeks after the theatrical debut.
Filmibeat has already claimed that the movie will release in the third week of April 2023, but this has not been officially revealed.
The satellite rights have also been sold to Sun TV.

The Times of India has reported that the pre-premiere non-theatrical rights, which include audio dubbings, digital streaming, and satellite broadcast rights, were sold for Rs 150 Crore.
The theatrical rights were then sold for around Rs 139 Crore; with overseas tallying up to more than Rs 35 Crore.
Varisu’s distribution is as followed:
