Summer 2022: Most Highly Anticipated Movies & Their Release Dates – MovieWeb

This summer is going to be stacked with some fantastic films. Grab some popcorn and mark your calendar for these highly anticipated releases.
When it comes to summertime fun, seeing a blockbuster movie is one of the best things you can do. Millions of people will be escaping the summer heat to see some of the many great films set to premiere this season. There are going to be films of all genres hitting the big screen this summer, and we are also going to see some of our favorite directors mark their return after some time off. Visionary filmmaker Baz Lurmann wrote and directed the highly anticipated Elvis, following the life and career of Elvis Presley (played by Austin Butler). At the same time, George Miller will be releasing his first film since Mad Max: Fury Road, with A Thousand Years of Longing. Pixar will also be coming back with their much anticipated Lightyear, following the origin of the famous Space Ranger, Buzz Lightyear, with Chris Evans leading the cast.
After the COVID-19 pandemic, the entire world lost access to seeing their favorite films on the big screen. Now with many parts of the world finally returning to a sense of normalcy, it is almost certain many will be rushing to the box office to buy their tickets. Many of the films premiering this summer will be continuing classic stories including the Downton Abbey and Jurassic Park franchise. And of course, one of the most anticipated films will be the creepy and highly mysterious, Nope, written and directed by Jordan Peele. Let's dive into what great movies are going to be hitting the big screen this Summer.

Original series creator Julian Fellowes wrote Downton Abbey: A New Era, which continues the story of the Crawley family and their adventures — and, of course, drama — while they travel to the South of France. Much of the cast of the first film will be returning, but there are some new exciting additions, including Hugh Dancy and Laura Haddock.
There have already been rave reviews coming in for the long-awaited Top Gun: Maverick. The film was delayed for years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the time is finally upon us to watch the iconic Peter "Maverick" Mitchell (Tom Cruise) instruct a new batch of pilots, including Goose's son, played by Miles Teller.
Loren Bouchard and Bernard Derriman's film, The Bob's Burgers Movie, will be based on the highly popular animated series, Bob's Burgers. All the beloved characters will be voiced by the original cast. The film will follow The Belchers' adventures to save their family business and is sure to be filled with hilarious storylines and memorable animated characters.
Jurassic World: Dominion will be the sixth film of the franchise, continuing the storyline of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and presenting a world in which dinosaurs now roam freely. This addition to the franchise will be bringing back the iconic characters played by Laura Dern, Sam Neill, and Jeff Goldblum, making for an epic Jurassic Park reunion.
Chris Evans will be voicing the beloved character of Buzz Lightyear in this highly anticipated origin story. The film will follow the interstellar adventures of Lightyear and his time in Star Command. One of the most anticipated animated movies of the summer — and the year — the trailer for Lightyear received 83 million views in the first hour, per Deadline.

Fresh from his villainous stint on Moon Knight earlier this year, Ethan Hawke is once again going very dark as an evil, sadistic child killer in The Black Phone. The film follows a young boy, Finney Shaw (Mason Thames), and his attempt to escape The Grabber's (Hawke) underground prison. The film is based on the novel of Joe Hill, son of famed writer Stephen King.
Austin Butler has already been receiving critical acclaim for his portrayal of the legendary musician, and King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley. Innovative filmmaker Baz Luhrmann directed and co-wrote Elvis, and Tom Hanks will be playing Presley's infamous manager, Colonel Tom Parker.
Since the release of the Nope trailer, fans have been trying to decipher the mysterious plot. Luckily, Jordan Peele did reveal that the film will be centered around an alien invasion, via IGN, and judging by his past films, it will deliver the goods. It is certain to be filled with chills, thrills, and a dynamite script.
DC's League of Super-Pets brings the DC Universe to the adorable world of animated pets. The movie follows Superman's (John Krasinski) dog, Krypto (Dwayne Johnson) and his epic quest to rescue the Justice League with the help of his other furry friends.
Brad Pitt is back on the big screen with the hard-punching film Bullet Train. Pitt will be playing an assassin, named Ladybug, who finds himself among several other killers while on a mission aboard a high speed train. The movie is going to be action-packed with a great cast, including Zazie Beetz and Brian Tyree Henry.
Three Thousand Years of Longing marks acclaimed filmmaker George Miller's first film since Mad Max: Fury Road. This fantasy/romance follows Alithea Binnie (Tilda Swinton) who is given three wishes from Genie (Idris Elba) while on a trip to Istanbul. The movie will be focused on the yearning to find love.
