I don’t know who will top as Logan Roy’s successor in Waystar Royco when the series last from Succession airs on Sundays. But thanks to this TikTok, I suspect. I have a suspicion.
Get ready, because this one is going in a direction I didn’t expect.
A definite case could be made for Kendall Roy, Roman Roy, or Siobhan Roy to take over as CEO. They are Logan’s children. Kendall and Roman are each very entitled, displaying strong fail tendencies and generally falling apart, but they at least have C-suite experience at the Waystar Royco, and of course Kendall’s name is written (and maybe crossed out? But maybe not) on the piece of paper found senior leadership team at Logan’s safe after he died. Shiv has no corporate experience, but he is brilliant and ruthless and has expertly forged his relationship with Lukas Mattsen to keep himself in the mix.
There are even theories floating around that the failed presidential candidate and oldest son Connor could get the nod, or that the crown could go to his bumbling Cousin Greg, which – let’s be real – would be the funniest possible outcome. The name Tom Wambsgans definitely comes up in this conversation, but I didn’t take him seriously as a competitor until I saw this TikTok.
This show is the first time I’ve ever heard of someone called Wambsgans. I should have asked my dad, who wasn’t watching Succession, but is a lifelong Cleveland baseball fan with an encyclopedic memory for baseball trivia. He could have told me about Bill Wambsganss, who played second base for the Indians from 1914 to 1926.
What’s interesting about Wambsganss is related to Succession was the greatest play he had ever made—the only unassisted triple in World Series history.
In Game 5 of the 1920 World Series, in the fifth inning, Clarence Mitchell of the Brooklyn Robins hit a line drive into second, which Wambsganss caught out. He stepped on base to stop Pete Kilduff, and he tagged Otto Miller on Miller’s way to second.
Our friends at DraftKings Sportsbook give Shiv the best shot at becoming the new CEO at +250. Kendall is right behind him at +300, Roman at +800, and Connor Roy at +1200. Tom appears fifth on the list with +2000 odds.
Tom Wambsgans will need an unassisted triple play, sending Shiv, Kendall and Roman to the dugout, if he is to replace the very expensive Logan. We’ll find out on Sunday if his name actually refers to World Series big game Bill Wambsganss.
