Disney Plus Hotstar has now come up with a web series titled Jhansi. Talented actress Anjali in the lead role, the show is currently available on the OTT platform. Let’s find out how it is.
Jhansi (Anjali) is an amnesia patient living in Kerala. One day Jhansi saves Sankeeth’s (Aadarsh Balakrishna) daughter Meha from an unexpected accident. Hence Sankeeth takes Jhansi along with them to Hyderabad and gives her a new life. Sankeeth, in turn, falls in love with Jhansi. At the same time, Jhansi keeps getting dreams about her past, where she is attacked and tortured by some unknown strangers constantly. Who are they? What is the connection between them and Jhansi? How is Baarbie (Chandini Chowdary) related to Jhansi? Did Jhansi solve the unfolding mysteries about her past? This forms the rest of the show.
Anjali once again shows her mettle with this series. She shines and carries the complete series on her shoulders. As a person suffering from a mysterious past, the actress was good at portraying emotions flawlessly. Moreover, she performed the action sequences with grace and elegance. Anjali is undoubtedly the biggest positive factor in the series.
The series starts off quite interestingly by presenting the new professional life of Jhansi and her relationship with Sankeeth and Meha. As and when Jhansi keeps getting the dreams, it makes us feel intrigued to know what would have happened in Jhani’s past. There are a few moments in this regard that give us decent thrills.
The childhood flashback episode of Jhansi is portrayed fairly. The basic premise is exciting and makes one involved initially. Aadarsh Balakrishna appears only for a shorter duration but does quite well in his respective role. The other supporting cast of the series is decent.
One of the most significant drawbacks of the show is leaving out many questions unanswered. We are left not with one but many cliffhangers that do not sit well once you are done watching the series completely. There are many loose points such as the reason for Baarbie’s transformation is left for the sequel and does not end well.
After an interesting start, the series never takes off completely, and many new characters and subplots are introduced, raising doubts. The interesting premise is hampered by the issues in writing. The mid and last episodes don’t raise inquisitiveness as the main point is not established.
Also, there is a sort of immature narration at places in the series. The series squanders around a few unwanted sequences adding to the length. Also, a few logics go missing, and the Police investigation angle isn’t shown fully. The ending again is bland with a weak hook point.
The production values, sets, and costume design of the show are really good. The music by Sricharan Pakala is in accordance with the theme of the series. The cinematography by Arvi is nice, and the frames bring in the required depth for a series surrounding child trafficking. The editing is just about okay.
Coming to direction, Thiru handled the majority of the episodes while writer Ganesh Kaarthic assisted Thiru in an episode. Though the plot line is thrilling, the lack of a gripping screenplay from Thiru and the abrupt ending of the series with many loose ends make it an underwhelming watch. What otherwise could have been a decent series is marred by below-par execution. The director should have provided a few more details to the viewers without confusing them.
On the whole, Jhansi has an exhilarating premise that is brought down by many flaws in the screenplay. Anjali gives her best in all possible ways, but the narration issues make this action thriller a strictly okay watch this weekend.
