AVATAR (Re-Release 2022)
This year marks the 13th anniversary of the release of James Cameron’s 2009 technological achievement and box office juggernaut AVATAR. The sequel to the Academy Award®-winning action epic, titled AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER, is set to open in AMC Theatres nationwide on December 16th, and take audiences back to the beautiful yet dangerous world of Pandora, where they will pick back up with the story of Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), and the rest of the Na’vi introduced all those years ago.
But before jumping into James Cameron’s stunning and emotionally-charged blockbuster, fans may want to revisit the original movie when it comes back to AMC Theatres nationwide for a special re-release in September 2022. Here’s everything you should know about the return to Pandora before AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER.
On December 18, 2009, James Cameron released AVATAR, which would go on to set a new worldwide box office record of $2.847 billion, eclipsing the one he set 12 years earlier with the 1997 release of his blockbuster love/disaster film TITANIC. Cameron could further distance himself from other blockbusters – AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR and AVENGERS: ENDGAME come to mind – and potentially eclipse the $3 billion mark when AVATAR returns to the big screen once more with the special remastered re-release.
Starting September 23rd, moviegoers will once again be transported to the alien world of Pandora and watch as Jake Sully meets and takes up the Na’vi cause while also falling in love with Neytiri, the daughter of Omaticaya Chief Eytukan (Wes Studi). And though the movie will be the same as far as the story is concerned, moviegoers will have something new to experience when it comes to the updated visuals and flash of the sci-fi epic.
When AVATAR was first released more than a decade ago, it dazzled audiences with its breathtaking and state-of-the-art visuals presented in IMAX 3D and Real 3D formats, which further helped bring the vast world of Pandora to life. The same can be said about the upcoming re-release, as AVATAR will once again be presented in the two 3D formats, but this time, audiences will be watching the story unfold in Dolby Cinema at AMC Theatres locations nationwide. With stunning visuals, explosive wall-to-wall sound, and comfortable reclining chairs, it will be like watching the movie for the first time all over again.
And when AVATAR returns to the big screen, it will be presented in 4K, which should really make the movie pop in a fidelity not yet around when the movie first dominated at the box office. And remember, this is a movie that took home three Oscars® for Best Cinematography, Production Design, and Visual Effects shortly after its initial release. Just imagine how great those effects, production design, and other aspects of the movie will look in the higher resolution and enhanced 3D effects.
Not even three months after AMC Theatre patrons are given the opportunity to return to Pandora with the AVATAR 4K re-release in 3D, they will be able to continue their cinematic adventure when AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER opens on the big screen on December 16th. Talk about a way to spend an evening at the movies with the entire family this holiday season.
The movie, which is set more than a decade after the events of the first film in the franchise, will once again follow Jake Sully and Neytiri as they navigate the picturesque and deadly canopies of Pandora’s forests and the crystal clear waters of its rivers, lakes, and oceans. However, this time the pair will be joined by a family of their own as they attempt to keep one another safe, survive perilous battles, and endure insurmountable tragedies.
Other members of the original AVATAR cast returning alongside Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña are Stephen Lang, who is reprising his role of Colonel Miles Quaritch, and Sigourney Weaver, who will play the couple’s adoptive daughter Kiri. There will also be some newcomers in AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER, including Jamie Flatters, Jack Champion, Bailey Bass, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, and Kate Winslet, to name only a few.
And based on new footage that was unveiled at Disney’s D23 Expo, audiences can expect to be immersed in the world of Pandora with vibrant color and dimension to the elements within each scene, which will hopefully make it an even more incredible experience than the original.
AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER won’t be the last time we return to Pandora or interact with the Na’vi, as several more entries in James Cameron’s franchise are slated to be released in the coming years. But before continuing the story, go back to where it all began by watching AVATAR when it is re-released in AMC Theatres nationwide on September 23, 2022.
