It has been 20 years since Fast & Furious from a B-class action movie to a billion dollar brand in Hollywood. But it seems that by Fast & Furious 9: Legend of Speed (Fast & Furious 9) , the brand’s A-grade quality has dropped to a point worse than the first part.
Fast & Furious 9 opens with Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) living peacefully with his wife Letty and son Brian. Then his former associates arrived with a top secret message from Mr. Nobody (Kurt Russell). He captured Cipher (Charlize Theron) but was ambushed in the middle of the road. The plane crashes, Nobody survives, but the top secret items on it are lost. Nobody sends a message to Dom’s group, believing they will find it. But another enemy awaits Dom’s family. He is Jakob Toretto, Dom’s brother.
This film marks the return of the character Mia, the younger sister of Dom and Brian’s wife (Paul Walker), equally important and curious as Han Lue (Sung Kang). But Hobb and Shaw are absent in the new season. Season 9 also delves deeper into the backstory of Dom and accordingly Jakob (John Cena), as well as the Toretto family.
Having said that, compared to its epic trailer, Fast & Furious 9 is no different from a mess that is mediocre at first and ridiculous in the latter. By the 9th part of the franchise, Fast Saga officially lost the personality of this movie, although the spirit was still intact.
It’s not hard to see where the inspiration for Dom’s family meme comes from. Those two words “family” are constantly mentioned here as if the movie thought the viewer had forgotten the intimacy that is a main theme of the Fast & Furious movies . No, viewers still haven’t forgotten, especially after the touching part 7 and part 8 featuring the “traitor in the family” motif. At this point, the family affection that the brand has always cherished suddenly becomes completely raw. Most of it is not only the fault of the new villain Jakob – where did the younger brother “fall” here, but also from the stiffness of Vin Diesel and the story is nothing special, unexpectedly predictable, and not sad at first. for the troubled brotherhood of the Toretto family.
This movie is still decorated with explosive scenes, intense racing as always, but it no longer brings the excitement like the original. Those are the moments where the ridiculousness of Fast & Furious 9 becomes unbearable. The illogical flying car scenes laugh at the physics to the movie scenes like a group of troops just need to aim and can’t escape but also fail. Although I know that no one looks to action movies to hear about logic, but the level of stunts here is ridiculously absurd and after so many scenes appear, it only leaves discomfort.
Fast & Furious 9 is a boring movie. The idea of street culture and racing cars that was new and exciting two decades ago with Rod Cohen as the director and a few lesser-known actors that really sensed the direction of the movie is now sad. dull and completely lost. The jokes between Chris “Ludacris” Bridges and Tyrese Gibson are recycled so many times that they become faded. Nathalie Emmanuel (Ramsay) looks lost throughout the movie. John Cena is “treaked” to be the most dangerous villain ever of the Fast & Furious franchisecould not be any more blurred here. The only thing that keeps him from sinking is thanks to an even worse performance by the male lead Vin Diesel. The two seem to be eternally trapped in a contest of who can be more murky and stiffer, instead of showing how past conflicts have worsened their brotherhood with their siblings. appropriate chemical reaction and less shy. It doesn’t seem like everyone is as good at this as Marvel – the studio is able to portray the dynamic between brotherhood from closeness to hatred and vice versa with the dramatic range of Shakespeare plays.
One thing that I like about Fast & Furious 9 is that it proves that the franchise has gone further than necessary. The Fast Saga should have ended at the 7th movie, when they successfully thanked Paul Walker and his character in the movie and in real life, followed by a happy ending for the rest of the characters, instead of being a brand from street racing culture to a seemingly special group of people who go about saving the weird world in a negative sense. We already have real screen heroes and real spies and we don’t need half-seasons like this anymore.
If released, Fast & Furious 9 could well pull audiences to the box office thanks to its past reputation, but it won’t be long before people realize how bad it is to get up and leave. At least this saga leaves plenty of room to develop more interesting spin-offs. Fast & Furious: Hobb & Shaw (2019) is a prime example.
