REVIEW: Dating Agency: Cyrano (2013)

This has been my favorite drama of the year or at least one of them. This is the fourth installment of Oh! The tvN cable channel series Boy and after watching two of them (the other being Flower Boy Next Door), I can say I like this the most.

This drama takes the premise of Cyrano’s 2010 film Dating Agency, but is actually much better than the film (which is one of the most boring films I’ve ever seen.) This drama keeps things simple and light and cheery. So it’s about a theater producer who starts an agency to help people in their love lives, to pay off a debt he owes because of a theatre. In the process, he is helped by two men and a new recruit, a girl, whom he eventually falls in love with.

The show is filled with adorable and well-written characters. Our hero is practical in his ideas about love but he also believes in it. He’s not a cold fish, but pretty cool with a great sense of humor. He likes to stay in his emotional comfort zone but reluctantly begins to fall in love. The hero has opposite ideas about love: he believes in the fantasy of romance and he is one of my favorite female leads in dramaland: he is honest with his feelings, straight forward, warm, friendly and very sweet. Basically, he is the heart of the series. Then we have Moojin, who is an engineer and a robot by heart. Go Ahrang is the cutest and the youngest among them, which is very sweet. And finally, the mysterious Tuan as the owner of the restaurant next door. Last but not least, two really funny thugs.

The main thing that made me fall in love with this show was the unexpected romance between our lead because the movie didn’t have it. I loved their interactions: whether it was a fight or a romantic suspense and eye contact, I enjoyed every bit of it. I love that despite not being the center of attention when it comes to love lines (as there are different cases for fulfilling that), we are always aware of their growing attraction. We could literally feel the sparks flying between them. I felt very dizzy with excitement while watching their scenes. I also find it funny how the other two members of our agency play cupid for OTP in their own adorable ways.

Another thing I like is that the agency always leaves room for natural elements and feelings even when it comes to setting up arrangements to help their clients. I was entertained by all the stories and the cameos by so many actors were like the icing on the cake. I love how these cases resonate with our main character’s life trajectory.

This drama is lighthearted and feels good but has depth in the little moments and his heart is in the right place. It is by no means shallow. The direction is sharp and fast paced. There is no needless anxiety, excessive emotion or negativity, even the noble folly is brief and makes sense to some extent. I also love the romance between Moojin and Hye Ri, so adorable.

The soundtrack for the show is one of the great features. All the songs are amazing and well placed. The drama faded in the second final episode spent in the kidnap sequence and I think it should have been cut short. But that’s just a minor complaint from me.

Excellent actor in this drama who never misses out. Lee Jong Hyuk is stunning and charismatic in this role. He played his character with ease and timing was great. Sooyoung is a revelation, which makes her character really sweet and believable. He radiates warmth. Together, the two are electric with a hot chemistry that can be felt right from the first episode. Lee Chun Hee is outstanding as a calm and composed yet strong chef and moneylender. She adds a great layer of mystery and grace to her role. Hong Jong Hyun is perfect in his role where he manages to show emotion even when he is expressionless. Jo Yoon Woo is really cute and fun. Bae Sung Woodan Kim Min Kyo was great as two thugs and brought a lot of laughs. All the actors who did the special performances were perfect. All the players have a great friendship with each other.

I’m not sure if you’re going to like Dating agency: Cyrano to the same extent as me, but there’s a one hundred percent guarantee that you’ll have fun and smile while watching it.
