Nightcrawler was first portrayed by Alan Cumming in the film X2: X-Men United. But in 2016 in the film X-Men: Apocalypse, Smit-McPhee took over the role. Since then he has returned to appear in the film X-Men: Dark Phoenix.
In an interview with Variety, Kodi Smit-McPhee said that his version of Nightcrawler won’t appear in Doctor Strange 2.
