The Loki series is part of Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and is the third series to be released after previously including WandaVision, and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
Here, Tom Hiddleston returns as Loki, along with Owen Wilson as a Time Variance Authority (TVA) agent, Mobius M. Mobius, and Sophia Di Martino as Loki’s variant named Sylvie.
This series arguably provides an idea of the concept of the multiverse, which is the main theme of the MCU in this fourth phase. The Loki series itself premiered on the Disney+ streaming service on June 9, 2021 yesterday.
The series subsequently received a very positive response on Rotten Tomatoes with a rating of 92%, and a rating of 7.9/10 based on 126 reviews.
Synopsis
During the Battle of New York in 2012, an alternate version of Loki escaped using the Tesseract, which contained a space stone. Loki is then in the Gobi Desert, Mongolia, and is found by Hunter B-15 with his troops from the Time Variance Authority (TVA), a timeline monitoring organization.
Then, Loki was captured by them for escaping the Battle of New York at the same time he had created a new timeline. Hunter B-15 resets the timeline in the Desert, and brings him before TVA judge, Ravonna Renslayer, to stand trial for his crime of disrupting the “Sacred Timeline”.
In front of judge Ravonna, this variant of Loki tells her that it should be the Avengers, who have time traveled to reappear in the Battle of New York in 2012.
However, Ravonna actually said that what the Avengers did was supposed to happen, but Loki’s escapism was a timeline crime.
TVA agent, Mobius M. Mobius, then took Loki into his room, and showed him Screen Time about the crimes he had committed in the past. He also shows Loki that in the future, he accidentally caused his adoptive mother, Frigga, to die in Asgard by being killed by the Dark Elves.
Next, Loki tried to escape from TVA, but unfortunately he couldn’t bring out his magic power. Then, he returned to the Time Screen, and tried to watch his future self. Loki finds himself dead at the hands of Thanos, and the journey of his life ends at that very moment.
After witnessing his future self, Loki reunites with Mobius, and agrees to assist him in hunting down other Loki variants that have committed crimes against the Sacred Timeline.
Then, Loki offered to Mobius to be able to meet the Time-Keepers aka the Time Keepers who created TVA, and the Sacred Timeline.
Mobius rejects Loki’s plan because he still doesn’t trust him because of his treacherous background. Some time later, Loki concludes that a Variant of himself is always hiding near apocalyptic events, where any action will have no effect on the timeline.
After visiting the events of Pompeii in AD 79, Loki and Mobius then head to the year 2050 in Alabama City, United States, which is being hit by a hurricane. At a supermarket, the two are attacked by the Varian possessing a Hunter B-15, and several survivors of the year.
When he met Loki, this Variant showed his true identity as the female version of Loki, who later became known as Sylvie.
Loki tried to persuade Sylvie to destroy the Time-Keepers together, but the proposal was rejected by him. Sylvie then activated TVA’s time reset tool, and ended up making the Sacred Timeline branch off into a mess.
Full of Mystery and Surprise
The first episode of the series opens with a few scenes from Avengers: Endgame , where Loki immediately runs away using the Tesseract after a moment of chaos between his fellow Avengers.
After being captured by TVA, Loki then finds out if he is a variant, a person who deviates from the timeline set by the mysterious trio of Time Keepers.
Normally, TVA “eliminates” the variants immediately to protect the Sacred Timeline from deviating, but TVA via Mobius has other ideas for Loki.
Another Loki variant has apparently terrorized TVA by killing agents, and stealing some of their time reset kits. The two then work together to find the variant in a challenging time travel.
This Loki series then has a lot of very interesting story surprises for this fourth phase of the MCU. In addition to the mysterious TVA organization, there is also the concept of a multiverse, the Sacred Timeline, to the appearance of “He Who Remains” aka the Kang the Conqueror variant as the person behind the TVA organization.
For 45 minutes in each episode, all the mysteries about it are then strung together in an exciting storyline, and solidly continuous.
In addition, this series combines various genres which makes the storyline very not boring. During the moment of adventure between Loki and Mobius, we will feel the buddy cop theme which is quite thick with a sense of humor.
From there, the series then switches to a science fiction theme when Loki, with his variant named Sylvie, begins his journey together to destroy the Time Keepers. The momentum between the two presents an extraordinary moving storyline, and is full of surprises.
The Relationship Between Characters Is Full of Attractiveness
The relationship between Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) becomes more intimate with each episode. The closeness shown by the two can not be denied managed to form the attraction of the whole Loki series.
Then, Loki’s character here looks much more immersive than what he showed in the Thor films, and Avengers. Hiddleston had a lot of time, and moments to grow his character as Loki for 6 episodes, and it went very well.
In the Loki series, we can really see that the “God of Mischief” is a very master liar, and narcissistic. At first, he was so focused on himself that nothing else was more important.
