Sam Worthington’s career didn’t really take off after the release of Avatar, but that could be set to change after the success of The Way of Water.
Sam Worthington, who portrays Jake Sully in Avatar: The Way of Water, might benefit the most from the sequel's delayed release. Sam Worthington was a relatively unknown actor before he was cast in 2009's Avatar, playing Jake Sully, a paraplegic former Marine who travels to the moon Pandora and finds himself integrating with the indigenous race of Na'vi. The Avatar cast became household names after James Cameron's first adventure on Pandora, bringing the likes of Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang back into the spotlight, while Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, and Joel David Moore saw breakout roles in the film.
It could have been assumed that having a starring role in one of James Cameron's most epic films, which would become the highest-grossing film of all time, would boost Worthington's career and make him a coveted name for many filmmakers. However, after the release of Avatar, Worthington seemed to disappear back into the woodwork, not having any roles as hard-hitting and recognizable as Jake Sully. This means that, with the December 2022 release of Avatar: The Way of Water, which sees Worthington back in full force, he could see a rapid rise in demand for more high-profile projects.
Originally, Avatar: The Way of Water was scheduled for release in December 2014. The sequel saw many delays over its production, with release dates falling in 2015, 2016, 2017, and more before being scheduled for December 16, 2022. For Sam Worthington, this release couldn't have come at a better time since his career didn't gain any traction after Avatar, so the fact that he has a leading role in one of the biggest films of 2022 is all down to the delays during Avatar: The Way of Water's development. With the Avatar sequels set to release in close succession, Worthington might now see a massive boost in his career.
There is hope for a surge in Sam Worthington's career after Avatar: The Way of Water and the upcoming Avatar sequels, even though the original film didn't seem to do his career any significant favors. Avatar: The Way of Water has seen a tremendous amount of success and is quickly catching up to Avatar as one of the highest-grossing films, so the fact that Sam Worthington now has two massive hits under his belt could mean that studios would want to snap him up quickly. This is especially true as advanced motion capture and CGI technology become widespread, as he has considerable experience working in these conditions.
The fact that people are talking about Sam Worthington again in 2023 means that he is sure to see a rise in work, mainly because his performance as Jake Sully in Avatar: The Way of Water is incredible, arguably far better than his stint in the original Avatar. Aside from the upcoming Avatar sequels, Worthington is lined up to star in Hello Stranger, Breathe, The Georgetown Project alongside Russell Crowe, and Horizon with likes of Kevin Costner and Michael Rooker. Avatar: The Way of Water continues to gain popularity and garner more and more success, so this certainly won't be the last that people see of Sam Worthington.
