In addition to movies, there are a number of television series being released in July as well. As the network television season normally wraps up in May, many of the upcoming shows will be released on various streaming services. Viewers will no doubt have plenty to choose from this July.
Despicable Me is one of the most successful animated franchises of all time, grossing nearly $4 billion across five movies, including the Minions' spinoff films. Minions: The Rise of Gru serves as both a prequel to Despicable Me and a sequel to The Minions.
The Rise of Gru follows Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) in the 1970s as he desperately tries to join a group of super villains to prove himself. The film has already set the box office record for the highest-grossing Independence Day weekend with $125 million domestically.
Coming to Prime Video on July 1st, The Terminal List stars Chris Pratt as Navy SEAL Lieutenant James Reece. Reece's platoon of Navy SEALs are ambushed on a mission, which drives Reece to investigate what really happened.

The Terminal List is based on Jack Carr's novel of the same name. The film is expected to perform well for Amazon Prime Video, likely because it boasts heavy talent in addition to Pratt in the lead role. Constance Wu, Jai Courtney and Patrick Schwarzenegger also star.
Arguably the biggest release of July, Thor: Love and Thunder finally hits theaters on July 8th to continue Phase 4 of the MCU. The film follows Thor as he attempts to find his place in the universe after the events of Avengers: Endgame. He's reunited with his ex-girlfriend Jane, who has now become The Mighty Thor, and must battle Gorr the God Butcher who seeks to destroy all gods.
There's plenty of hype around Love and Thunder after the wildly successful Thor: Ragnarok, especially with Taika Waititi returning to direct Thor's fourth installment. Thor is the first hero in the MCU to receive a fourth solo movie, a testament to how far the character has come and how well-received Chris Hemsworth's performance has been.
Netflix has a few film releases this month, starting with The Sea Beast. The movie follows a legendary sea monster hunter who attempts to capture a monster that a stowaway girl has recently befriended. The Sea Beast stars Karl Urban and Zaris-Angel Hator in the lead roles.
The Sea Beast was produced in-house at Netflix Animation, joining a small list of animated films that the streaming service has produced. The film had a limited release in June and lands on Netflix on July 8th. It has received critical acclaim and currently holds a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The already-successful fourth season of What We Do In The Shadows drops on FX on July 12th. Continuing the story of traditional vampires living in modern day New York City, the series is based on the indie film of the same name that was created by Taika Waititi.

What We Do In The Shadows has become one of FX's most successful series, currently holding a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The series has already been renewed for a fifth and sixth season, despite season four not yet being released. It is clear that FX has lots of faith in What We Do In The Shadows as its popularity has soared.
Netflix's live-action adaptation of Resident Evil debuts on the streaming service this month. The eight-episode series is set across two periods and follows the Wesker family as they deal with monsters that are taking over the planet. Jade and Billie Wesker suspect that their father Albert is hiding some deep secrets about the monsters.
Resident Evil had a long road to production and was also affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The series was retooled over 2020 and was finally filmed in 2021. The streaming service hopes to capitalize on the success on the long-running Resident Evil film series, as the show is Netflix's second adaptation of the property after Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness.
One of the most anticipated movies of the year drops on Netflix this month: The Gray Man. Based on the novel of the same name, the film stars Ryan Gosling as a CIA agent who goes up against his former colleague, played by Chris Evans, after learning agency secrets. The Gray Man's impressive cast also includes Ana de Armas, Rege-Jean Page, and Billy Bob Thornton.
The Gray Man is Netflix's most expensive film, boasting a budget of $200 million. It will be directed by the Russo Brothers, who are famous for their work in the MCU. Netflix is also hoping to turn The Gray Man into a successful franchise.
Jordan Peele's long-awaited return to the director's chair comes in the form of Nope. Nope follows a pair of siblings who attempt to capture evidence of UFOs after strange objects begin falling from the sky. The film reunites Peele with the star of his directorial debut Get Out, Daniel Kaluuya.

Peele has already had two smash hits in the horror genre: GetOut and Us. In addition to Kaluuya, Nope also stars Keke Palmer, Steven Yeun, and Keith David. If Nope is anything like Peele's last two films, it will be a smash success and in awards season conversation.
After more than a two-year hiatus, the hit animated series Harley Quinn returns this month for season three. Following Poison Ivy confessing her true feelings at the end of season 2, Harley and Ivy run away together after stopping Ivy's wedding to Kite Man.
Kaley Cuoco returns to voice Harley, and Harley Quinn will have no short number of guest stars from various corners of the DC multiverse. Season three will be the first season streamed exclusively for HBO Max, as the first two seasons were released on the now-defunct DC Universe streaming service.
At the very end of the month, DC League of Super-Pets will hit theaters. When the Justice League is captured by Lulu, Superman's dog Krypto and Ace the Bat-Hound form a group of super-pets to help save their owners from impending doom.
DC League of Super-Pets boasts an impressive voice cast that includes Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Kate McKinnon, John Krasinski, Vanessa Bayer, Diego Luna, and Keanu Reeves. The film will feature the entire Justice League as well as various DC villains. DC League of Super-Pets has had a long road to release, premiering over a year after originally planned due to delays and switching release dates with other films on Warner Brother's docket.
